More reasons to take Vitamin D…. – Dr. Bannon's Blog

A short blog this time. Ive written about the usefulness of Vitamin D in the past; not only is it likely to be useful in MS, but also seems, according to this search through the medical databases, it has anti-viral activity and is likely to be useful against Sars-Cov2-19.

The paper, published in June is titled:

Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, is a promising candidate for COVID-19 prophylaxis

This is its abstract, or summary:

“COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. While awaiting a vaccine, several antivirals are being used to manage the disease with limited success

To expand this arsenal, we screened 4 compound libraries: a United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug library, an angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) targeted compound library, a flavonoid compound library as well as a natural product library.

Of the 121 compounds identified with activity against SARS-CoV-2, 7 were shortlisted for validation. We show for the first time that the active form of Vitamin D, calcitriol, exhibits significant potent activity against SARS-CoV-2. This finding paves the way for consideration of host-directed therapies for ring prophylaxis of contacts of SARS-CoV-2 patients.”

Since its publication in June we have further direct evidence from Spain of how treatment with the fast acting form of Vitamin D reduces the risk of being admitted from general wards to ICU by 70%.

With the news understandably focusing on vaccines and further restrictions, its important not to forget the potential of Vitamin D to keep you healthy.  Keeping your vitamin D levels at their normal levels in this day and age needs supplements for the vast majority of us. It has never been more important.

….Just sayin’….

  1. Thanks – of course garlic will not have been studied as such but has lots of health benefits and a nutritious diet plays such a big part in health. Sadly, its now more important than ever, but staying healthy really does improve the chances. Garlic specifically? It has lots of potential benefits and why not!

  2. Hi Colin, thanks for this – as you recommended, we've been taking a daily supplement since the get go! I've heard that eating raw garlic has a strong anti-viral effect (among some others, too, no doubt – and some less welcome!), and make the blood an inhospitable place for a virus…. care to comment? xxx
